Albert DeSalvo was an alleged American rapist and serial killer in Boston, Massachusetts, who purportedly confessed to being the "Boston Strangler", the murderer of thirteen women in the Boston area from 1962 to 1964. In 1967, DeSalvo was imprisoned for life for committing a series of rapes. However, his murder confession has been disputed and debate continues as to which crimes he actually committed.

And the story continues …

In the fall of 2001, the body of Albert DeSalvo was exhumed from his Massachusetts grave Friday and transported by hearse to a forensic laboratory at York College. A team of scientists gathered at the central Pennsylvania college and began a second autopsy on the nearly three-decade-old remains of the confessed Boston Strangler – to identify his killer and possibly prove his innocence in series of notorious murders.

Twelve years later a water bottle recovered from a construction site where Tim DeSalvo (whose uncle Albert DeSalvo had confessed to being the internationally notorious Boston Strangler) gave police the DNA evidence they needed to bring closure to a case that has been a mystery for nearly 50 years, murders for which no one has ever been charged. The Boston Police Department revealed that DNA preserved from the body of the Boston Strangler’s last victim–raped and murdered in 1964–can now be linked with “99.9 percent certainty” to the late Albert DeSalvo.
