Farina began his career in law enforcement as a Chicago police officer and, later in life, was a talented character actor often typecast as a mobster or police officer. A late-bloomer in the world of acting, he was prolific later in life starring opposite such heavy-weights as Robert De Niro and Tom Hanks and was no stranger to television appearing in Miami Vice and co-starring in several series such as Crime Story and Law & Order.

Fun Fact

A 10-year veteran of the Chicago police force, Dennis Farina was discovered by director Michael Mann during the filming of Thief (1981). Farina had served as Mann’s tour guide. Impressed by his street savvy, the director cast him in the film. Farina parlayed that performance into a number of TV guest-star appearances on such NBC crime series as Hunter and Miami Vice, executive produced by Mann.
