Art Carney
Fun Facts:
Before TV fame, Carney was a popular radio actor in the 1930s and 1940s. He had a knack for doing celebrity impersonations and comedic characters. Carney played several instruments and even recorded novelty songs. His musical talent often showed up in his comedy routines.
Carney won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1974 for his role in Harry and Tonto, beating out Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Albert Finney, and Jack Nicholson. He played an elderly man traveling cross-country with his cat where he convincingly played a man in his 70s, despite being only 55 years old at the time!
He served in World War II and was wounded in the leg during the Battle of Normandy, which caused a lifelong limp. He often concealed it on-screen with clever blocking.
Despite his comedic persona, Carney struggled with alcoholism and mental health issues throughout his life. He eventually overcame these challenges.
Carney was married three times to two women. In 1940, he married his high school sweetheart Jean Myers, with whom he had three children, Eileen, Brian and Paul, before divorcing in 1965. In 1966, Carney married production assistant Barbara Isaac; they divorced in 1977. After his divorce from Isaac, he reunited with Myers, and they remarried in 1980 and remained together until his death.
