Joseph “Baldy” Belmont (born William Albertus Ducharme, circa 1873/1875 – May 16, 1939) was an American actor best known for his work in early silent-era and early talkie films. Performing under his stage name, he appeared in numerous shorts and motion pictures from about 1912 through 1936, often in comedies produced by studios such as Mack Sennett’s. Belmont played memorable character roles in films like Baldy Belmont Breaks Out (1914) and Baldy Belmont as a Roman Gladiator (1913), and was featured alongside stars like Ora Carew in productions such as Dollars and Sense (1916). Belmont’s most successful period was from 1912 through the mid-1920s where he appeared in and produced over 200 shorts. Baldy starred in his own series as well as opposite stars like Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Ben Turpin, Vivian Prescott, Ora Carew, Bert Roach, Marie Prevost, and W.C. Fields. Eventually, his career slowed, and by the time sound arrived, he was appearing in extra and bit parts until three years before his death. His film work spanned the transition from silent cinema into sound, making him a recognizable figure in early American screen entertainment. Belmont died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Los Angeles in 1939 at age 63.
