William Henry Crocker (1861-1937) was the youngest son of Charles Crocker, one of the "Big Four" railroad magnates of the 19th century that also included Leland Stanford. William was founder and later president of Crocker National Bank. He was a member of the University of California Board of Regents from 1908 until his death in 1937. He was a major donor to UC Berkeley, helping fund the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. His philanthropy included contributions to the San Francisco Opera House and donation of his Nob Hill property, site of the Crocker mansion destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, for the construction of Grace Cathedral. In 1910 Crocker built his New Place mansion in Hillsborough which today is the Burlington Country Club clubhouse.

Fun Facts

William’s uncle, Edwin B. Crocker, a wealthy California lawyer and later California Supreme Court justice, and his wife, Margaret Crocker (née Norton) founded the oldest still operating museum of the Western United States in Sacramento, the Crocker Art Museum.

His nephew, Harry Crocker, was a movie star in the 1920s and, at one time, the personal assistant of Charlie Chaplin.

William H. Crocker was a collector of fine paintings from around the world including Monet, Eugene Boudin, Paul Cézanne, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas. Unfortunately many of these paintings were lost during the devastating earthquake and fire in San Francisco in 1906.
