Raymond Devos was a celebrated Belgian-born French humorist, stand-up comedian and clown who was best known for his sophisticated puns, surreal humour and sophisticated wordplay. He is fondly remembered as a master of the French language and the absurd. Devos began his career in the circus before rising to prominence as a legendary stand-up comedian, where his intelligent, poetic, and paradox-driven sketches earned him international acclaim and France's prestigious Legion of Honour. Perhaps his best-known international appearance is a cameo in Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le Fou 1965 as a man sitting on a harbourside who is obsessed with the memory of a mysterious love song. He performed for the last time in 1999 in Paris's Olympia Theater.
