American Christianity has been nothing if not a graveyard for once-powerful preachers who fell under the weight of their own hubris, but few "holy men" fell harder and farther–and more deservingly–than the religious leader, televangelist, author, grifter and con-man Robert H. Schuller. The ministry started innocently enough in the late 1950s preaching from atop the snack stand at a local drive-in movie theater in Orange County, California. The ministry grew into an international empire with the Hour of Power broadcast, the iconic glass Crystal Cathedral, and elaborate seasonal pageants. However, unsustainable production costs, declining donations after the 2008 recession, and poor financial oversight pushed the church into $55 million+ in debt, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in October 2010. While 140 staff members faced layoffs, the church cut its orchestra and choir, and small-business vendors were left unpaid. All the while Schuller family members continued drawing high salaries, generous compensation packages, and tax-exempt housing allowances. In 2012, Robert Schuller sued his former ministry for $5 million over intellectual property rights to his sermons and name (he lost). Later that year, the iconic Garden Grove campus was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange for $57.5 million and renamed Christ Cathedral.

Oh There’s More …

To quote OC Weekly obituary writer (see link below) Gustavo Arellano, Schuller was a legendary asshole, a pathology he always masked with his grin and grandfatherly ways. He gleefully engaged in the anti-commie witch hunts of the 1960s, a past that he tried to mask long afterwards. He hobnobbed with corrupt politicians like Ronald Reagan, former Congressman James Utt, and OC’s felonious sheriff, Mike Carona. Waitresses in South County knew that Schuller was a bad tipper and a terrible customer. Remember that incident where Schuller abused an airline stewardess, and he claimed he was trying to give her a blessing, which led to the Rev getting a misdemeanor? Asshole.

In November 2011, the debt-ridden Crystal Cathedral asked its congregants to donate meals for Arvella Schuller—the wife of founder Rev. Robert Schuller—and announced that a limousine service would transport the food to them. Church administrators sent an email asking members to prepare and drop off low-sodium meals (such as fruit, meat, soup, and quiches) as Arvella Schuller recovered from pneumonia. The email instructed members to leave the food at the church’s Tower Lobby so that limo drivers could pick it up and deliver it to the couple. The arrangement triggered widespread outrage among parishioners and observers, who noted the stark contrast between using a luxury limousine service and the megachurch’s massive $50 million bankruptcy debt. Note that the Schuller Family net worth around this time was estimated to be in the range of $5 to $10 million dollars. Grifters gotta grift.
