David Warfield was an American stage actor and at the time was one of the world's richest entertainers. Warfield's was considered as a leading American actor in comedy largely due to his distinct style in which he portrayed a kindly old gentleman who is pathetic in misfortune and amusingly eccentric. One of his best known roles include Anton von Barwig in The Music Master, his role in The Auctioneer, and title role in The Return of Peter Grimm.
Fun Fact
Although David Warfield was considered one of the wealthiest entertainers of his day, he didn’t get rich from his acting abilities. Later in life Warfield turned down offers to work in films and successfully invested his earnings in real estate with Marcus Loew. Their enterprises eventually developed into a nationally known entertainment corporation. Marcus Loew was a pioneer of the motion picture industry who formed Loew’s Theatres and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio (MGM).
