Eliza Jumel was one of the most remarkable rags-to-riches story in early American history. Born Elizabeth Bowen in poverty in Providence, she endured a difficult childhood marked by financial hardship and periods in workhouses. As a young woman she moved to New York City, where she worked in the theater and later married the wealthy merchant Stephen Jumel in 1804. Through this marriage she gained wealth and social status, but she also demonstrated considerable business skill, helping manage and protect the couple’s investments. The Jumels lived in what is now known as the Morris–Jumel Mansion, and Eliza became known for her art collection, extensive travels in Europe, and ambition to rise within elite society. After Stephen Jumel’s death in 1832, she married former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr, but the marriage quickly deteriorated and ended in divorce. Despite controversies surrounding her life, Eliza remained one of the wealthiest women in New York, managing her own affairs and property with unusual independence for her era. She died in 1865 at the age of 90 in her beloved home very near the cemetery where she rests.
