Jerry Orbach
And There’s That One Story About Mobster Joey Gallo
The unlikely, brief friendship between notorious Colombo family mobster Joe “Crazy Joe” Gallo and legendary Broadway actor Jerry Orbach blossomed in early 1971. It began after Orbach played a character based on the gangster, leading to daily hangouts, high-society parties, and the mobster’s wedding in Orbach’s living room. The peculiar bond started with a chance encounter in Brooklyn, where Orbach and his wife, writer Marta Curro, were dining. Gallo, fresh out of prison, had recently read about Orbach playing a screen counterpart—a spoof of the Gallo crew in the film adaptation of Jimmy Breslin’s book, The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight. Instead of being upset, the well-read and famously unpredictable mobster was fascinated. He approached the Orbachs, introduced himself, and a fast, intense friendship was born.
The friendship was short-lived when Crazy Joe’s premonition came true on April 7, 1972, when he was assassinated by rival mobsters at Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy. Jerry Orbach and his wife were among the mourners who attended his funeral.
