Joe DiMaggio
There’s More Than Just Baseball
He was the only son of DiMaggio and Dorothy Arnold, an actress whom the sports legend married in 1939. The athlete had no children with his second wife, Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio Sr. left his only child a $20,000 annual trust fund in his will, signed in 1996, the year the two reportedly last saw each other. He also bequeathed his son 45% from the sale of his firm, Yankee Clipper Enterprises. Unfortunately Joe Jr. never saw his inheritance as he died shortly after his father.
It was January 1937 when Joe met actress Dorothy Arnold on the set of the film Manhattan Merry Go-Round, confirming his celebrity status outside of the baseball diamond. Joe and Dorothy married at St. Peter and Paul Church in North Beach. More than twenty thousand people crowded inside and outside of the church to see the famous couple. It was reported that people even climbed onto tree branches and rooftops to see Joe and Dorothy leave the church following the ceremony. While the couple had one son together—Joseph Paul DiMaggio II born on October 23, 1941—they were unable to make their marriage work as Joe wanted a traditional housewife while Dorothy wanted to continue acting. Joe and Dorothy divorced in 1944.
Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe were married in January 1954 after a whirlwind romance that captivated the public, uniting a legendary baseball star with Hollywood’s most famous actress. Their marriage was intense but short-lived, marked by DiMaggio’s jealousy, Monroe’s demanding film career, and frequent conflicts over fame and independence. After only nine months, Monroe filed for divorce, citing mental cruelty, and the marriage ended in October 1954. Despite the split, DiMaggio remained deeply devoted to Monroe for the rest of his life, supporting her during difficult times and arranging her funeral after her death in 1962, a gesture that underscored the lasting emotional bond between them.
