Jack Kerouac, was an American novelist who, alongside Jack Cassidey, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, was a pioneer of the Beat Generation in the late 1950s through the early 60s. After the publication of On The Road and The Dharma Bums Kerouac became an underground celebrity and, with other beats, a progenitor of the hippie movement. At the time Kerouac greatly influenced many of the cultural icons of the 1960s, including The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and the Doors.

Fun Fact:

In his final year of life, Jack Kerouac made only $1,770 as he lived quietly (e.g. drinking heavily) at 5169 10th Avenue N in St. Petersburg, Florida. His ramshackled home remained untouched and unlived in for 45 years after his death. His favorite chair and a Lowell, MA phone book still remained the same as the day he died. The home finally sold in 2020 gutted of all evidence of the famous resident.
