Anna Chromy is a Czech-German painter and sculptor known for her powerful works of art that often explore themes of human emotion, mythology, and spirituality. She was born in 1940 in Austria and developed a passion for the arts early in life. Chromy studied in Vienna and later moved to Paris, where she refined her craft and gained international recognition. Her works often feature classical and symbolic motifs, blending elements of realism and abstraction. She is perhaps best known for her monumental sculptures, including a large-scale depiction of the "Spirit of Music," which was displayed at various international exhibitions. Throughout her career, Chromy also explored various mediums, including painting, and her works have been exhibited in major galleries and museums around the world. Her art is characterized by its sensitivity to the human experience, capturing both the beauty and complexity of the world around her. Some of her best known works include The “Cloak of Conscience”, “Olympic Spirit”, Eurydice”, “Sisyphus”, “Prometheus”, “Gaia”, “Europe” and “Ulysses”, all part of the exhibition “Mythos Revisited”, first shown at the National Archeological Museum in Athens. Even after death, Anna Chromy has had a lasting impact on the contemporary art scene, leaving behind a legacy of powerful visual language and emotional depth.

Fun Facts

During her studies in Paris, Anna Chromy met her mentor, Salvador Dalí, who also became a personal friend. As his pupil, Dali inspired Chromy’s imagination and creativity with his personal style of art known as surrealism. Chromy developed an appreciation of Dali’s style, and her paintings drew from her admiration of Dali and other artists of surrealism such as Max Ernst, Rene Magritte. She did a charcoal of Dali and Gala titled “Homage Dali & Gala,” and Dali’s image appears in her 1981 oil painting, “The Boat of Cadaces.”

Awards and recognition of her life’s work include the Michelangelo Award (the “Sculptors Oscar”) in Tuscany, the Honorary Fellow of the National Sculpture Association of China, Beijing, the Golden Medal of Prague 1 and the First Western Artist invited to a Solo Exhibition in National Museum, Beijing
