Anthony "Tough Tony" Spilotro started out as an enforcer for the Chicago Outfit. He later ran a burglary ring known as The Hole In The Wall gang and took over Outfit operations in Las Vegas. Things were problematic for Spilotro in Vegas. In addition to being blacklisted from all Las Vegas casinos by Harry Reid, he also had an affair with fellow Outfit Vegas controller Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal's wife, which is a big no-no according to mafia ethics (such as they are.) Tony's mishaps in Vegas piled up, creating all kinds of noise and attention that accumulated into a mess that eventually sent boss Joey Aiuppa and Jackie Cerone to prison. Plus, it's been reported that Aiuppa was incensed that Tony was sleeping with Lefty's wife. The Outfit boss decided it was time for The Ant to die. In 1986 Spilotro and his brother Michael were lured to a home in Bensenville, IL and murdered in the basement. They were buried in an Indiana cornfield.

Not So Fun Facts

By the time of his death in 1986, the FBI suspected Spilotro was involved in 22 or 25 murders including those of:

Sam DeStefano on April 14, 1973 (mobster considered one of the worst sociopathic killers)
former Chicago Outfit boss Sam Giancana on June 19, 1975
William McCarthy and James Miraglia (aka The M&M Murders)
William “Action” Jackson (enforcer and loan collector for the Chicago Outfit)

Contrary to belief and as depicted in the Martin Scorsese film Casino (1995), The Spilotro brothers were not killed in a cornfield. However there bodies were found at the Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area near Enos, Indiana after they were killed in Illinois.

The house at 17W101 Bryn Mawr Ave in Bensenville, Illinois looked like any random suburban home – but it was far from it. In the basement the Spilotro brothers were led down to their impending death. Nick Calabrese was hiding as the brothers made their way down the stairs. Michael led the way, with Tony behind him, followed by Jimmy Marcello, who picked up the brothers and drove them to the Bensonville home. As Michael was nearing the bottom, Nick grabbed his feet, causing him to fall forward, with Marcello assisting as the rest of the guys there pounced on Tony. What happened next was sheer brutality as they were beaten by 10 to 12 associates for 2 hours before choking to death on their own blood. The house has since been torn down.
