Crime and their Victims
Bugsy Siegel began his career in crime including armed robbery, extortion, rape and murder during his teen years. He teamed up with Meyer Lansky to form the Bugs and Meyer Mob where he added car theft, gambling, bootlegging and hitman to his resume. By the late 1920s, Lansky and Siegel had ties to Luciano and Frank Costello (future bosses of the Genovese crime family) and later formed Murder, Incorporate. By 1946 his associations and illegal activities made it impossible for Siegel to stay on the East Coast and he moved to Hollywood where he threw lavish parties and enjoyed the company of actors George Raft, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant as well as studio executives Louis B. Mayer and Jack L. Warner. But what Bugsy Siegel is best known for is investing $6 million ($62 million in today's dollars) in loans from the Mob in a dried-up desert town and building the first destination casino in Las Vegas called the Flamingo Casino. Initially a huge flop, they added a hotel to the casino and reopened four months later to rave reviews and solid profits. But Siegel had worn out his welcome with the Mob back east and, suspected of skimming profits from the casino, had a contract put out on his life by Charles "Lucky" Luciano and Meyer Lansky.

Fun Fact

The E.N. Sperry House located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida along the riverside of New River is often called the residence of the infamous mobster known as Bugsy Seigel. Great story for the locals but there is no evidence that Bugsy Siegel ever lived in or visited Ft Lauderdale.

Bugsey Siegel was also a boyhood friend to Al Capone; when there was a warrant for Capone’s arrest on a murder charge, Siegel allowed him to hide out with an aunt.
