Gennaro Angiulo
Fun Facts
A period of gang warfare erupted in Boston beginning in September 1961 and involving the rival Irish mob groups, the McLaughlin Gang of Charlestown and Somerville’s Winter Hill Gang. Determined to end the war, Patriarca decided to back the Winter Hill Gang to eliminate the McLaughlin Gang. Angiulo claimed to have killed twenty Irish mobsters to quell the gang war, saying he and his brothers “buried 20 fucking Irishmen to take this fucking town over”. When it was all over, the feud resulted in over 50 murders.
The Angiulo brothers were the leading Italian-American crime group from Boston’s North End, from the 1960s until the mid 1980s. As “made men” in the Patriarca crime family, they were placed in control of the racketeering throughout Massachusetts. The Angiulo crime family was made up of the Angiulo brothers and cousins including:
- Antonio Angiulo
- Michele Angiulo
- Gennaro Angiulo
- Nick Angiulo
- Donato Angiulo
- Francesco Angiulo
Interestingly enough, all the brothers died of natural (e.g. non-violent) causes.
The press continues to this day to call him “Jerry” Angiulo. In a documentary his son stated that associates and close friends would call him “Jay” – never Jerry.
Jay Angiulo spent his final days at his estate located at 9 Vernon St in Nahant, Massachusetts.
