Vincent Astor was the grandson of Caroline Schermerhorn Astor—famously known as “the” Mrs. Astor—who presided over New York’s high society. Born in her Fifth Avenue mansion in 1891, he was the son of Col. John Jacob Astor IV, who perished on the Titanic, and his first wife, Ava Lowle Willing. At the age of 20, he inherited the legendary, multimillion-dollar Astor Estate following the tragic sinking of his father, John Jacob Astor IV, aboard the RMS Titanic. At the time, his sudden immense wealth made Vincent the wealthiest man in the world valued at $78 million.

How Did The Astor Family Accumulate Their Fortune?

It all started with John Jacob Astor – a modest instrument maker, Astor eventually made a fortune in the fur trade and New York City real estate, amassing wealth that would lay the groundwork for generations of Astors.

Next came his son, William Backhouse Astor Sr., who inherited the family empire and expanded its involvement in real estate. His massive investment in Manhattan real estate enabled major donations to the Astor Library in the East Village, which became the New York Public Library.

Next we have John Jacob Astor III who inherited one-half of the vast Astor empire. Outplayed by Cornelius Vanderbilt over railroad companies and control, he nevertheless handled the vast NYC real estate empire quite nicely.

Caroline Astor (1830 – 1908) was an American socialite who led the Four Hundred, high society of New York City in the Gilded Age. Referred to later in life as “the Mrs. Astor”, she was the wife of yachtsman William Backhouse Astor Jr. They had five children, including Colonel John Jacob Astor IV. Vincent was her grandson.

Finally Brook Astor was the third wife of Vincent Astor and was an American philanthropist, socialite, and writer. She served as the chairwoman of the Vincent Astor Foundation until 1997 when the trust was dissolved and the remaining assets distributed.

Without getting into the details, there are two Astor families – The American Astors and the U.K. Astors. Descendants of the U.K. Astors are firmly entrenched in the upper echelons of British society. For instance, Harry Lopes (a great-great-grandson) married Laura Parker-Bowles, the daughter of Queen Camilla, while other descendants are closely connected to Prince William and Kate Middleton.
