Historical Figure
John Tyler was the tenth president of the United States, serving from 1841 to 1845 after briefly holding office as the tenth vice president in 1841. As vice president, John Tyler set the example for a seamless and immediate succession of presidential power when an incumbent president dies. He is known for being the first president to serve without being elected to office, and served nearly an entire term of four years after President William Henry Harrison died just 32 days after taking office. Tyler demonstrated how a president who was willing to use the veto could block Congress. He vetoed a bill resurrecting the Bank of the United States (which Jackson had dismantled).
