Samuel Colgate, son of the found of Colgate William Colgate, was an American manufacturer and philanthropist, born in New York City. He became widely known as a soap maker, and the manufacturing operation he built in Jersey City developed into one of the largest establishments of its kind in the world and is now part of Colgate-Palmolive. He was also prominent in philanthropic work and for more than 30 years he was trustee of Colgate University.

Fun Fact

If you were wondering if Colgate University is named for the Colgate family – then you would be correct. Conjointly with his brother, James Boorman Colgate, Samuel Colgate gave large sums to Colgate University, which in 1890 was named in honor of the Colgate family. His son, Samuel Colgate, Jr. became the first head football coach at the school.

As you enter the cemetery take the first right and drive a short distance until you see the white “Hartford” mausoleum. Make a sharp left with the Hartford mausoleum on your right and drive 200 feet and on your right you will see the massive 4-column mausoleum that is the final resting place of George Huntington Hartford (A&P Super Markets). Continue on that road as it winds around to the left and look to your right after another 200 feet for the Colgate monument. Note none of the plots are marked so … good luck!
