John Cazale was an incredible actor who, in the course of 6 short years starred in 5 of the most iconic movies ever made - all of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. Cazale chose to make his final movie, the Deer Hunter, despite having been diagnosed with lung cancer which shortly after metastasized to his bones. He was so ill the director agreed to shot all of his scenes first. He died in New York City on March 13, 1978 with his fiancé, Meryl Streep by his side before his final movie was released.
