Joseph Giunta was an Italian-American mobster, President of Unione Siciliana and confidant of Al Capone's rival Joe Aiello. He was a lead conspirator in an attempt to overthrow Al Capone’s criminal empire. When Frank Rio (Capone's bodyguard) got wind of the plot, according to legend Giunta and his associates Albert Anselmi and John Scalise were beaten and shot to death by Capone at a party. Their bodies were found the next day in Hammond, Indiana.
Fun Fact
While it makes for a great story, Joseph Giunta, Albert Anselmi and John Scalise were shot during a party they were invited to and their bodies dumped on the roadside. All three were executed by multiple people using .38 caliber handguns. If you read the actual autopsy report performed by an actual medical examiner, you can see they indicated there was no internal injuries or bruising indicating a beating prior to being executed. The broken bones listed in the autopsy were made by the bullets. So the story of Al Capone using a baseball bat to kill his rivals is just that … a story.
